Lesson 9: Leading Lines

Use natural lines to lead the viewer’s eye

Natural Lines Lead the eye to your subject

Use the lines that already exist in your subject to lead the viewer’s eye

Find the lines

Natural lines exist everywhere. They come in the form of a fence line, the painted lines on a road, boards on the side of a house and really anything that can lead the viewer’s eyes to your subject.

Pro Tip:
When you find a good subject, look around for a way to incorporate lines into the image. Not every photo needs to have all the elements, this is just one really great tool for your toolbox

Different Perspective

General speaking, you will need to take the camera to different perspectives. You will need to get the camera down low, lean against a wall or shoot from an odd angle to make this work.

EXERCISE: Find some natural lines. Deck boards, a fence, angles of a car body, blinds on your windows will all work. Really, anything that will lead the viewer’s eye to a subject. Shoot first with the subject in focus and a second shot with the subject blurred and the close part of the line in focus.
