Lesson 1: Perspective

Get the Camera out of the No-No Square

Find a Unique perspective

Getting the camera out of the no-no square shows your audience a view they have not seen before. It’s interesting!

The no-no Square

Everyday, all day, we see the world from the same perspective. Whether we are sitting at a desk, in our car, walking around, sitting in class, watching tv or standing on the sidewalk, we see the world from roughly the same position.

When we take photos from this position/perspective, they are boring. It’s likely that the audience has seen the same thing before. By moving the camera out of the no-no square, we create an image that is interesting and begs questions from the viewer.

Pro Tip:
If your camera has a tilting viewfinder, use it! Getting the camera close to the ground gives the viewer a perspective they have not seen before.

Get High or Low

Here are some examples of images taken outside the no-no square. You will see very quickly that interestingness has more to do with how a subject was photographed more so than the subject itself.

EXERCISE: Find several everyday objects. An apple, the car, your computer keyboard, shoes, etc and shoot images from either high above or down low at ground level or really any perspective which is different than you see everyday.

Note: Don’t forget to set your camera settings appropriately first. Get correct exposure and white balance, before you start playing with your composition. (Intro Course lessons)
